Day 90: A tough week
Hi everyone, what a tough week it’s been, rowing like bastards! We’re only getting about 6 hours off at the moment so I need to be quick, I’ve got to sleep. Hope you are all OK. Last Friday we saw a Blue Whale - the most incredible thing I have ever seen. The size of a bus, just incredible. Apart from that just been cracking on with the rowing, really excited about getting to the 1000 miles to go mark and can’t wait to get to Mauritius! Lots of positive thoughts on board. Thanks again to everyone for looking at the blog, please keep putting your messages on there - can’t wait to read them all when we get home. Just a few messages…congratulations to Mike Moss from MSS (our title sponsor) on his newborn - Andy and I are really excited for you. Trumpet- we will keep plodding on, in the style of the Berlin marathon. Dione - can’t believe you are coming out to see us in Mauritius - hearing that you were coming really put a smile on my face during my last set. Darren from Paragon - thanks for your supportive message. Fiona and Simon - thank-you again for mentioning the incredible effort our team have been making, we have got a really good group of girls helping us back home. Also thanks to Angus from Architectural Plants for your great guest blog. Can’t wait to read all of these messages when we get back! Alright guys, time for bed I think.

From where I’m sitting this looks BRILLIANT. Really great progress and eating those miles up - won’t be long now. Just thinks - Mauritius = beer!

Re Chris’s comment: lol. I’m sure there are plenty more classic ‘Watts’ moments out there!
BTW, was driving along listening to Michael Jackson in my mate’s car the other day - brought back memories of Collyers and the Thewmobile! So did watching an episode of the Inbetweeners where one of them gets his first car. Good times…
Seriously, though, who would have thought back then that we’d be following Guy and Del’s lives on the internet, or reading about them spotting a blue whale in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Life is good! Boys, really proud of how well you’re doing; can’t believe there’s less than a thousand to go now - well done!
Following your progress on the blog. Well done to Tom (or whoever it is) for updating Guy’s Facebook status with the blog posts - helps me to keep checking up on the boys. Actually really impressed in general with how well supported they’ve been from the ‘ground crew’

Truly incredible what you’ve accomplished so far and still amazes me every day what strength of character it must take to conquer an ocean in a rowing boat. Plus it’s really great to see you’re clocking up the miles and bonus for all of us addicted dot watchers on the edge of our seats! Must be a great feeling and reassuring knowing you’re getting ever closer to Mauritius, not to mention motivating. Keep it up (conditions permitting) and you’ll be there before you know it, for a feast of beer and plenty of dirt!!
I was remembering back to the incredible training regimes and how you measured progress with a little friendly 5k competition and so asked Tom what your PBs were roughly. Then I thought it would be interesting to see how far you’ve rowed based on 5k’s. The results were as follows and are rough calculations based on the last position viewed …….
Last Update, From Start (nm), To Finish (nm)
18/07/2009 06:03, 2468, 668
Total Race Length (3132nm) 5800km = 5k x 1160
Rowed so far (2468nm) 4571km = 5k x 914
Left to go (668nm) 1237km = 5k x 247
They have already rowed the equivalent of 95% across the US based on 4827km coast to coast or
4.71 times the length of Britain based on 970km from Lands End to John O’Groats.
Guy’s PB is 18 min 10 sec and Del’s is sub 18 min, so based on a rough average of 18 min ….
If it was possible to row at this pace 24/7 on the rowing machine, they would cover the total race distance in 14.5 days solo.
Their current (very rough) average for 5k and bearing in mind the hugely different conditions is 142 min.

Reading the comments tonight I can feel the energy from everyone - it’s fantastic the support Andrew and Guy are getting. Such a relief to see the mileage dropping………….
The stats are interesting - thank you Moses!!
Tom has done a brilliant job of keeping the daily blog going - it’s interesting that he should have had the most work to do - again the differences in Guy and Andrew and how they compliment each other………….Sarah and I have had limited blogs to write!!

Fantastic progress this last week. The 500nM mile post is in sight and you must almost be able to smell land……well soon anyway. I can feel the excitement mounting. It must be tiring putting in all the effort you are doing but so exhilarating as well! You have done brilliantly…I cant wait to see you cross that line. Go for it…Just ROW and ROW for a few more hard days.
July 19th, 2009 at 5:50 am
Dione - wondered about that beard you’ve started…explains a few things.
Moses - bl**dy hell mate, too much time on your hands! What sort of dirt are you referring to?
(waaaaaa haaaaaaa)
July 19th, 2009 at 8:03 am
Trumf what on earth were you doing up at 5.50am on a sunday - unless you were just getting home!!
Boys - amazing to see the progress on the Woodvale site this morning - so you managed to row 5897nm north and 5938nm back again all while i was sleeping - that’s very impressive n’all but just wondering what’s stopped ya rowing at that speed all the time!!!
Getting sooooooooooooooo close to SC now - keep going and push it - push it real good!!!
July 19th, 2009 at 8:20 am
Pete, wicked times boss man. Moses your stats are unreal, very interesting, certainly makes you realise what these best mates have achieved. Mind boggling. Kepp rowing lads.

Ah yes, I remember the yellow machine! Good times. Keep it up boys, incredible stuff. If you finish in approximately one day and four hours then I’ll have the sweepstake… hmm, perhaps slightly optimistic, but soon you’ll be there!! Mental. John and I were talking up the Horsham Beer Festival last night, we shall be there!
As for now, off to Lovebox festival in East London, in the rain. Got me wellies and waterproof, you’ve gotta love British summer time!
Keep it up, you’re almost there (as Andy Williams would say…. ahem, one for the parents maybe…)

Great to see that you have been going for 91 days and are still getting along with each other so well!! Also, great that you are nearly down to the 600 mark too. We are all so admiring of your amazing progress every time we log on.
Although a long, hot summer was forecast for the UK it has been very wet and windy here and not a sign of anything different coming soon. The Open Golf is on at the moment in Scotland and The Ashes cricket at Lords -both in blustery conditions!!! Chris said he heard Russell Crowe and Shane Warne commenting on the cricket together on Sky Sports and it was terrific. Russell Crowe is in the UK filming at the moment.
Take care and keep going.
